“I don’t get it. You said you didn’t have your keys, but you’re in your car? You left the doors unlocked?”

“No. I have that combination lock thing on my door, so I can get in without a key.

Quit with the third degree, will ya? This neighborhood’s really bad. Just come get me.

Please?”

“Yeah, okay.”

Kye pulled on a T-shirt and hurried down the hall. He glanced in at the sleeping pair, wondering if he should wake them or just leave a note. He decided on the latter. With any luck, he’d be back home before they even knew he’d been gone.

He raced down the stairs, the phone still to his ear. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.

Hang on a sec.” Using the message pad beside the kitchen phone, he scrawled a note that he’d gone to give a friend whose car was broken down a lift and he’d be back shortly.

Grabbing the keys from the hook beside the front door, he hurried toward Cassidy’s car. The phone still to his ear, he demanded, “Tell me exactly where you are.”

“I’m near the ship channel. The street signs say Lyon Avenue and McKee. I’m near a bar called The Cesspool. These two guys…I can’t tell you. I’m so embarrassed.”

Kye’s stomach twisted again. “Did they hurt you, Derek?”

“Not fatally.” Derek barked a mirthless laugh. “It’s a gay bar. A dive. When I got there I knew I shouldn’t even walk in, but I’d heard it was a hot scene, and it’s nowhere I’d ever run into anyone I know, that’s for sure. I had fun at first. But then I met these two guys. Fred and Victor. They took me back in an alley behind the bar. Oh God, I can’t—” His voice choked off in a sob.

“Derek, it’s okay. We’ll talk about it later. For now just sit tight and make sure your doors are locked. I’ll be there as soon as I can. I’m going to hang up now so I can concentrate on getting there.”

Not being familiar with the city, except for Montrose and River Oaks, he stopped at a gas station and bought a map. As he paid for it, he asked the clerk behind the counter,

“Could you tell me how to get to the ship channel? To Lyon Avenue and McKee?”
